Itinerary:

Day 01 & 02: Meru National Park

Upon your arrival at Wilson Airport you board your scheduled flight to Mughwango Hill Airstrip.  Flights depart on Wednesdays and Fridays at 07:45.  From the airstrip a short road transfer, 15 minutes, will bring you to camp.

Meru National Park was made famous by the book Born Free, detailing author Joy Adamson’s hand-rearing of orphaned lioness Elsa in the Park. The beautiful Rojewero River bisects the Park, and along its banks birdwatchers may be fortunate enough to spot the handsome palm-nut vulture and the very elusive Peter’s finfoot. There is a diversity of scenery in Meru National Park, and a wide variety of habitats, ranging from forest, dry bush and grasslands to swamps and numerous rivers lined with doum palms, tamarind trees and acacias. The wildlife is varied, and numerous. Lion, leopard and cheetah are present, as are elephant and buffalo. There are large numbers of hippo and crocodile in the River. Grevy’s and Burchell’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk add to the diversity.

Spend two nights at Elsa’s Kopje.  Accommodation is in a thatch and stone cottage with en-suite hand basin, bath and w.c.  Your stay is on a full board basis including scheduled activities and park fees. Activities include game-drives, night drives and bush walks. Kenya’s best kept secret, the untamed wilderness of Meru National Park is best explored from its hidden jewel – Elsa’s Kopje. Each of the 10 individually built cottages are luxuriously appointed, and all are considered the ultimate ‘room with a view’.

Day 03 & 04: Shaba National Park

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Shaba Airstrip.  From the airstrip a short road transfer, 10 minutes, will bring you to camp.

Spend two nights at Joy's Camp.  An elegant oasis in the arid lands of Samburu; Joy’s Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson’s tented home in Shaba National Reserve. The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book. The 10 chic canvas bedrooms are set raised off the ground with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. The camp overlooks a large natural spring where elephant and lion jostle for watering rights with herds of buffalo and the rare desert species of Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe and Grevy’s Zebra.

Each sumptuous tent is uniquely decorated with Boran/Somali cloth design, handmade glass and the vibrant fabrics of the local nomadic tribes creating a chic, sophisticated and stylish camp. Each tent has it’s own private verandah, ideal for private game viewing as well as relaxing, reading and soaking up the truly wild environs offered by Shaba. The eastern corner of the Samburu eco-system, Shaba is a secluded idyll; an arid landscape dotted with lush springs and rocky river gorges. Joy’s Camp is the perfect choice for discerning guests interested in a glimpse of Kenyan history, as well as those looking for an authentic wildlife experience combined with the comfort of a luxury-tented camp. Your stay is on a full board basis including scheduled activities and park fees. Activities include game-drives, night drives and guided walking.

Day 05, 06 & 07: Masai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip where you board your scheduled flight to Kichwa Airstrip.  Daily flights depart at 09:15.  From the airstrip a short game-drive transfer, 10 minutes, will bring you to camp.

Arguably Kenya’s premier wildlife area, the famous Masai Mara National Reserve covers an area of 1 510 square kilometres/575 square miles, and forms the northern extension of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is famous for its annual Great Migration of more than two million herbivores and thousands of Thomson’s gazelle, zebra and impala. Aside from the Migration, game-viewing is excellent throughout the year. For the bird enthusiast 500 species have been recorded.
The Masai Mara is well-known for its spectacular black-maned lion and for up-close-and-personal cheetah sightings. Lake Victoria is accessible as a day’s excursion from the Masai Mara.

Spend three nights at Bateleur Camp at Kichwa Tembo. Situated below the location where Out of Africa’s famous final scene was filmed, this romantic and totally private camp reflects the ambience of Kenyan safaris of the 20s and 30s.
